Whether you’re high school sweethearts or met last year on hinge – you know you’re ready to take it to the next level and make it permanent. *gulp* Now what? This June on Stewart Kuper Jewelers it’s proposal month! First we’re going to walk you through the process of how to propose. Remember, with anything like this, traditions may or may not play a big part in it for you and your loved one. So this advice isn’t one size fits all, though we’ll try to make it as universally helpful as possible. Let’s get into it!

How to Propose, First Do Some Planning

Before you get down on one knee, first make sure you and your partner are on the same page. Second, if you’re feeling traditional speak with their parents.Third, it’s time to go ring shopping!

Ensure You’re on the Same Page

Yes, this seems obvious but it bears mentioning in any guide to propose because it really is that crucial. Proposing when one partner isn’t there yet can make for some serious hiccups in the relationship. Avoid that by talking with your loved one about the future. What do they see? Be open about it because that’s what you need them to be too.

Speak with Parents

Asking the parents first is definitely a tradition of yore, but depending on the family and people involved it might very much still be important to them. If your partner has given you the idea or outright told you that “asking” for their hand from their parents isn’t what they want then skip this step, but if they have ever suggested otherwise it might be a good idea to speak to the parents directly. It doesn’t have to be a request, but simply stating your intentions can make them a part of the process and keep everyone happy.

Buy the Ring

We won’t spend too much time on this point because we have talked about how to buy the right engagement ring before! Follow any of our other guides to get the right engagement ring for the occasion.

How to Propose Right

Make it Personal

Really think about the proposal and the person you’re asking. The proposal can be as big or as small as you want it, but whichever way you go it should be the right match for the two of you. It can take place anywhere as long as it means something to you. That might be your living room, it might be your patio. Even the most ‘mundane’ spaces can be elevated with candles and other decorations.

Have Some Notes

We’re not suggesting you write a big speech or anything, but having a few notes written down can help you in the moment. Turns out, proposing is a hugely emotional moment and it’s been known to leave a person speechless. This is fine, so long as it’s not the proposer getting their tongue tied. To avoid this, put pen to paper and jot down some of your thoughts. Say what you love about your partner, how you feel, just make sure you don’t forget to include those four magic words.

Plan for Photos

Depending on where and how you decide to pop the question, it might be nice to plan for photos! It could be a friend lying in wait hidden in the shadows or you could hire a professional. If the proposal is a surprise you’ll be able to get some great candid photos!

Be Like Water

What we mean by that is be malleable, be flexible, and don’t rush it. You’re ready to propose and now you just need to go with the flow for a moment. Your perfect plan might get sidelined when dinner doesn’t go exactly right, or the weather isn’t agreeable.  Rehearse your proposal, keep your eyes out for opportunities but don’t feel the need to force it when it isn’t going to feel natural. On the same side of the coin, you don’t have to wait for the absolute perfect moment. So, be flexible, be ready.
