Determining The Value of Your Diamonds

The value of a diamond is determined by a combination of factors known as the 4 Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight. Each of these factors contributes to the overall beauty, rarity, and value of a diamond.

Here’s a brief explanation of how cut, color, and clarity specifically affect a diamond’s value:

Cut

The cut of a diamond refers to the quality of its proportions, symmetry, and polish. A well-cut diamond reflects light internally and back through the top, creating a stunning sparkle. Diamonds that are poorly cut may appear dull or lifeless. Diamonds with an “Excellent” or “Ideal” cut grade are generally more valuable than those with lower cut grades.

Color

The color of a diamond is assessed on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). A colorless diamond is more valuable because they are harder to find, and allows for the maximum reflection of light— ultimately giving the diamond its sparkle. As the color becomes more visible, the value of the diamond typically decreases.

*This scale doesn’t apply to special-colored diamonds (like blues, pinks, or greens), which are evaluated and priced differently based on their rarity and color intensity.

Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external) in a diamond. The clarity scale ranges from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions and/or blemishes visible to the naked eye). Diamonds with fewer imperfections are more unique and more valuable.

Don’t Clean Your Diamonds for Us

While regular cleaning  will maintain sparkle, it does not have an impact on the resale value. When evaluating your diamonds, Stewart will focus on the intrinsic value of the diamonds. Cleaning the jewelry will not change the composition and not affect the market value.
