The unfortunate reality in our society is that home burglary is the most common threat to a home, with a home burglary happening every 13 seconds in the U.S. In fact, the place where you keep your jewelry is most likely where a burglar is going to look first when breaking into your home. So, with that in mind, knowing where to hide and protect your jewelry is crucial in keeping those valuable and sentimental items in your hands and your hands only.

Jewelry theft is often a crime of opportunity, so keeping your jewelry in a place that is not easily accessible is a great way to reduce your chances of falling victim to this type of theft. Start by getting a jewelry safe box for items that you want to keep hidden and protected.

Buying a safe box is one measure you can take, however you should go the extra mile by securing your jewelry in a place where no one would think to look. A burglar will usually be in and out of your home in 10 minutes or less, so making it difficult for them to find your valuables can make a big difference in losing them. For your important jewelry items, you might want to place them in a clever spot instead of a visible jewelry box.

Here are some unusual spots and products to hide your valuables:

  • Inside a hollowed out book: You could get creative and make one of your own to place on a bookshelf or in your home library.
  • A false container in the kitchen pantry or refrigerator that is actually a safe meant to store your items.
  • Inside a false wall outletperfect for any small valuables. It can be placed anywhere, even behind some furniture.
  • Faux air vent storage unit – install one of these in a hallway or bathroom near a ceiling to create an unlikely disguise that a burglar would not even think to search.

You might consider purchasing jewelry insurance, which can cover accidental damage, loss and theft. There’s nothing wrong with adding an extra layer of protection. The insured jewelry can usually be replaced or repaired. Unfortunately there are some priceless items that cannot.

Overall, being cautious and aware at all times in and around your home is always a good idea to help prevent a burglary. Keep doors locked and do not advertise any items through your windows for strangers to see. For an extra preventative measure, you might consider installing security cameras outside your home.
