We want you to be fully educated about the diamond you are buying. The ‘four Cs’ describe the major elements of a diamond and help to establish quality. Today we are going to be discussing diamond color.
Color Grading
Diamonds come in a variety of colors, ranging from radiant blue, to warm, gentle pink. However, when we are discussing the color grading of a diamond, what we are actually discussing is the absence of color. An ideally colored diamond does not have any color at all. The Gemological Institute of America assigns a letter rating to a diamond when grading its color. An absolutely colorless diamond receives a ‘D’, while a highly colored diamond receives a ‘Z’ rating. The more colorless a diamond is, the more value it holds.
Understanding Color
Color is just one of the elements of a diamond. Understanding how color works with the overall appearance of the ring can help you pick out the right diamond for you. Color is displayed differently depending on the carat, and cut of the diamond, as well as the setting of the ring.
Color is more difficult to detect if a diamond is set in a gold ring. Likewise, diamonds with more facets will reflect more light. This too creates an effect which can hide color. As the carat of a diamond increases, color will become easier to detect.
Choosing the right diamond is all about balancing these factors and deciding what is important to you. If you are concerned with color, but would like to lower cost, you can opt for a yellow gold setting and a princess cut while buying a more colorful diamond.
If you have any questions regarding color, please do not hesitate to ask of one of the knowledgeable jewelers at Stewart Kuper Jewelers.
